Diablo II 2d vs 3d question
Gimme a 2D Castlevania! Symphony of the Night is one of my fave games ever. What a huge disappointment Castlevania 64 was with its dodgy gameplay and stinking graphics! :( Symphony of the NIght was an EXCELLENT game. Going 3D with Castlevania just showed how much weaker that format actually is.

2D vs 3D- Opinions wanted
Now, it works in 2d but not 3d. Obviously this is because it's not properly installed. So now I have a decision to make, buy the diablo ii warchest for $44 or play the 2d version. Is there a difference between 2d and 3d? and is the Lords of Destruction expansion pack worth while? Also, has anyone seen Diablo II at

2D vs. 3D distance calculation
Maybe it is time that developers started focusing on 2D games as they do with 3D games as I feel that both types of games still have a lot of life left in them. As I started to rant on this topic I became curious as to what other people felt about 2D and 3D games. Here are some people's opinions about this

You can view units from different angles in most 2d RTSs, it's just that the angles that work are predefined. ;-) Some 2d games also allow a couple of different views of the map, just by pre-rendering all the buildings etc from 4 angles. So your definition of a 3D game is "one that is 3d accelerated"?

3d is cool and all, but 2d fighters are more fun to play, for me anyway. It might be that is because I grew up on 2d fighters when I was in school. PSX didn't come around until 1995 and I graduated a year later so maybe it has something to do with that. -- All Purpose Cultural Randomness

Fighting Games: 2D vs 3D
It is used to mean "a 2d game using some 3d effects" (an average of 2 and 3d), as opposed to 2.5 dimensions. I consider isometric view 2.5D. For games that use 2D and 3D, label them 2D/3D hybrids--simple. Well, again that's personal choice. Just make sure people know what you're talking about when you use it.

If your units can jump, does that make it 3D? Or is there some scientific formula which qualifies a game as 3D? Well, a primarily land-based game could have flying units. If you can control their altitude, it gives the game a 3d-control component, if you can't, the controls are still 2d. Jumping doesn't imply 3d

In 2d games the artist, not the player, is responsible for the ideal perspective, paradoxically the artist transfers the responsibility of the artistic vision to the viewer. This is something that I really dislike about (current, counterintuitive) 3d games where you can view the scenery from any point (as opposed

If all we had in games was realism there would be no gameplay (it would be a life-simulator, like living in some soap opera); it's the creative application of the unreal that makes a game interesting. - Robert PS: Do we really need another 2D vs 3D thread? And BTW, if you don't like 2D games, there are PLENTY of 3D fighters around, which I also happen to enjoy, but don't chastize those of us who happen to enjoy the few 2D games that are still being made, just because you don't care for them. Personally, I think a game like Marvel vs. Capcom would look awful in 3D.
