A 3d game is internally 3d. everything is represented in 3 dimensions, your location, distance, angles, everything. Your definition of a 2d game vs. a 3d game are ENTIRELY arbitrary. Personally I will weep the day beautiful 2D graphics like those being the standard these days give way to 3D worlds a la Quake (even if the quality of the 3D graphics will continue to improve). 2d vs 3d performance
An interesting thing to note: SFC is a 3 dimensional display game, but the underlying map is 2D. Regarding 3D in MOO3, I think that it might be fine. You have a top view (just as in MOO2, flat overhead view), but you can use a more dramatic 3D view. I just don't know if it would affect play.

Can this be explained by 2D vs. 3D distance calculations? Does the 12CX indeed calculate distance travelled in 3D? I very much doubt it was 2D vs 3D unless you were rock climbing. :-) My GPS-II+ has a threshold of 3.6 Km/hr (2.2 mph) for recording trip time and odometer. It's a 2d interface; you're walking in a map, but the isometric view improves the realism and immersion. The worlds aren't genuinely 3d; you're on a 2d plane; climbing stairs etc puts you on another plane. I can't remember clearly but I think U7 might have had some elevation effects (eg terraced hillsides).

I would guess that 2D will always be common, but 3D submissions to the sharing site I would expect to become very common. And this is also a good time to mention that most 3D submissions will contain both 3D and 2D elements. So the video-card will definitly be an important part of the system.
